mvg pieter bollen

17 5-speed transmission - removal and Installation (type 016 Z)
1 Disconnect the negative lead from the battery.
2 Raise the vehicle and place it on jack stands.
3 Remove the exhaust system behind the catalytic converter.
4 Unplug the wires on the back-up light switch.
5 Remove the reinforcement strut at the rear suspension tube to facilitate work procedures.
6 Engage 5th gear. Remove the rubber cap from the front transmission cover, immediately ahead of the torsion bar tube. Position the clamping bolt on the drive shaft clamp by turning one of the rear wheels while the other one is held in place. The bolt is of the socket head type and requires a very long socket wrench extension to loosen. Remove the bolt. Keep the transmission engaged in 5th gear.
7 Detach the axle shafts and suspend them with wire or string in a horizontal position to avoid damage to the bearings (Chapter 10).
8 Remove the self-locking nuts from the transmission mounts and dispose of them. Replace them with new ones when installing the transmission,
9 Position an universal transmission jack or a floor jack with a thick piece of plywood beneath the transmission and secure the transmission with a rubber strap to prevent its falling. It is advisable to keep an assistant by the transmission at all times during the next steps, to prevent the transmission falling.
10 Unscrew the bolts from the sides of the rubber/metal mounts. Raise the transmission slightly and remove the mounts. The left, rear brake line is immediately above the selector rod. Do not raise the transmission too far or the brake line will be crushed. If the brake line is deformed in any way, replace it (Chapter 9).
11 Remove the lower transmission mounting bolts from the flange at the drive shaft tube.
12 Lower the transmission until the front transmission cover rests on the torsion bar tube
13 Push the transmission to the right of the vehicle andr emove the conical bolt at the selector shaft. Separate the selector rod and the selector shaft in the transmission.
14 Remove the two upper transmission mounting bolts from the flange at the drive shaft tube.
15 Lift the transmission slightly, pull it to the rear, lower and remove.
16 Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
17 Raise the transmission into place and roll the transmission jack forward so that the drive shaft is engaged in the clamp.
18 Install the four transmission mounting bolts into the flange at the drive shaft tube and torque them in a cross pattern to 61 ft-lb(8.5 m-kg). If this is not done at this point, you will not be able to install or tighten the top left bolt.
19 Slide the transmission to the right and slip the selector rod into the selector shaft. Install the conical bolt and torque it to 15ft-lb (2.1 m-kg).
20 Install the rubber/metal mounts and torque the side bolts to 30 ft-lb (4.2 m-kg). Install new lock nuts on the lower studs and torque them to 30 ft-lb (4.2 m-kg).
21 Remove the transmission jack.
